Culture

The Culture Sector of Thimphu Dzongkhag plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the district. This includes safeguarding ancient monuments, temples, lhakhangs (temples), traditional festivals, and local customs that define the identity of Thimphu’s people.

Background

Established as part of the broader effort to protect Bhutan’s intangible and tangible heritage, the Culture Sector works under the guidance of the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development and collaborates closely with local communities, monks, and cultural institutions. Thimphu Dzongkhag is home to important cultural landmarks, including the iconic Tashichho Dzong, numerous historic lhakhangs, sacred sites in the northern gewogs (like Tango and Cheri monasteries), and vibrant annual tshechus (festivals). The Culture Sector ensures these sites and traditions are maintained, restored when needed, and passed on to future generations.
