Election
The Election Sector of Thimphu Dzongkhag plays a vital role in upholding Bhutan’s democratic process by ensuring that elections at the dzongkhag and gewog levels are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently. This sector operates in coordination with the Election Commission of Bhutan, following national electoral laws, guidelines, and codes of conduct. Its responsibilities include preparing and updating electoral rolls, facilitating voter registration, educating citizens about electoral processes, and overseeing the logistical arrangements needed for elections, such as setting up polling stations and training election officials.
Background
Beyond organizing elections for the National Assembly and National Council, the sector also manages local government elections, including those for Gups, Mangmis, and members of the Dzongkhag Tshogdu and Gewog Tshogdes. The Election Sector plays an important role in voter education, aiming to increase public awareness and participation while promoting values like integrity, responsibility, and inclusiveness. Through its work, the sector helps strengthen democratic governance and ensures that the voices of all eligible citizens in Thimphu Dzongkhag are represented in the country’s decision-making processes.
