Pumola Hike
The Pumola Hike is a serene and culturally enriching trail that leads to the sacred Pumola Monastery, perched on the forested slopes above Thimphu valley. Often considered one of Thimphu’s hidden gems, this hike offers a balanced mix of nature, spirituality, and breathtaking views.
The trail starts near the outskirts of Thimphu and gradually ascends through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron, where prayer flags flutter gently in the mountain breeze. Along the way, hikers often encounter serene meditation huts and ancient chortens, adding a spiritual dimension to the walk. The Pumola Monastery itself, though modest in size, is revered by locals and provides a peaceful spot for rest and reflection.
Depending on pace and starting point, the hike typically takes around 3–4 hours round trip, making it ideal for half-day exploration. The summit rewards hikers with panoramic views of Thimphu city framed by surrounding mountains, especially stunning during sunrise or early morning.
The Pumola Hike is perfect for those seeking a gentle adventure close to the city, combined with quiet moments of spiritual contemplation amid Bhutan’s pristine natural landscape.
