Economic Development and Marketing Sector

The Economic Development and Marketing Sector of Thimphu Dzongkhag plays a key role in driving local economic growth and supporting farmers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to improve livelihoods and create sustainable income opportunities. This sector focuses on identifying and promoting economic activities suited to the dzongkhag’s diverse geography, ranging from peri-urban areas to highland gewogs. By facilitating market access, value addition, and product diversification, the sector helps local producers and artisans reach wider markets within Bhutan and, where possible, beyond.

Background

It works closely with relevant government agencies, cooperatives, and private stakeholders to strengthen value chains in agriculture, handicrafts, and small-scale agro-processing industries.

In addition, the Economic Development and Marketing Sector supports training and capacity-building programs that enhance business skills, encourage entrepreneurship, and foster innovation among local communities. Through these efforts, the sector aims to reduce rural–urban income disparities, create employment, and contribute to the dzongkhag’s overall socio-economic development in line with national policies and the vision of Gross National Happiness. By connecting production with markets and nurturing a dynamic local economy, the sector plays an essential role in making Thimphu Dzongkhag’s development inclusive and resilient.
