Environment
The Environment Sector of Thimphu Dzongkhag plays a crucial role in safeguarding the district’s rich natural resources and promoting sustainable development. Situated in a dzongkhag that includes both the bustling urban center of Thimphu Thromde and vast rural gewogs like Naro and Soe, the sector works to balance the pressures of urban growth with the need to conserve forests, water sources, and biodiversity.
Background
Its responsibilities include implementing national environmental policies at the dzongkhag level, coordinating waste management initiatives, monitoring environmental compliance in developmental projects, and raising public awareness about conservation.
In close collaboration with agencies such as the National Environment Commission and the Department of Forests and Park Services, the sector ensures that development activities across the dzongkhag are carried out with minimal environmental impact. It supports gewog administrations and local communities in protecting water catchments, managing community forests, and mitigating issues like land degradation and human–wildlife conflict. Through environmental education programs and community participation, the Environment Sector encourages residents to take an active role in preserving Thimphu’s unique natural heritage for future generations. Guided by Bhutan’s constitutional mandate to maintain at least sixty percent forest cover and rooted in the country’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, the sector’s work reflects a deep commitment to harmony between people and nature.
