Brief Background of the Gewog:

Genekha Gewog is one of the gewogs under Thimphu Dzongkhag, located to the south of Thimphu city. It is characterized by lush forests, fertile valleys, and traditional villages nestled along gentle hillsides. The gewog sits at altitudes roughly between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, making it well-suited for agriculture and horticulture. Genekha is also known locally as the “Mushroom Village” due to its abundance of wild mushrooms, especially the prized matsutake mushroom, which has become an important source of income for local farmers. The people of Genekha Gewog engage mainly in farming, livestock rearing, and gathering forest products. The area retains strong cultural traditions, marked by annual festivals and community rituals. Its scenic landscape, combined with the nearby trekking routes like the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, has also brought modest eco-tourism interest, helping to support livelihoods while preserving its natural environment.
