Livestock

The Livestock sector of Thimphu plays a vital role in enhancing rural livelihoods and supporting food security. It focuses on improving the productivity of cattle, poultry, piggery, and other livestock through breeding programs, vaccination campaigns, and disease control measures. The sector actively promotes dairy farming by supporting farmers’ groups and cooperatives, which has helped increase milk production to meet the growing demand in urban and peri-urban areas.

In addition, the sector facilitates training programs and technical guidance to farmers, encouraging the adoption of modern livestock management practices. Apart from economic contributions, the livestock sector also works to preserve indigenous breeds and maintain the ecological balance within the dzongkhag. Emphasis is placed on sustainable farming practices that align with environmental conservation policies. Through various initiatives, the sector aims to reduce rural–urban migration by creating income opportunities in rural areas and ensuring that livestock farming remains an attractive and viable livelihood for the people of Thimphu Dzongkhag.
