Naro Gewog is situated in the north-central part of Thimphu Dzongkhag, within Lingzhi Dungkhag. It lies in the high Himalayas bordering Paro Dzongkhag to the west and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north. The gewog is mostly mountainous and remote, with elevations ranging from about 3,500 to over 5,000 meters, known for its yak herding communities and pristine alpine landscapes.

Brief Background of the Gewog:

Naro Gewog is one of the three highland gewogs under Lingzhi Dungkhag in Thimphu Dzongkhag, located in the rugged northern Himalayan region of Bhutan. Its terrain consists of high mountain ridges, deep valleys, and wide alpine pastures, sitting at elevations ranging from around 3,500 to over 5,000 meters above sea level. The gewog is sparsely populated, with small clusters of traditional stone houses scattered across the vast landscape, and is accessible mainly by foot along long mountain trails.

The livelihoods of the people in Naro revolve largely around yak herding, production of dairy products such as cheese and butter, and collection of high-altitude medicinal plants like cordyceps. Despite its isolation and harsh climate, the gewog plays an important role in preserving Bhutan’s unique highland culture, traditional lifestyles, and environmental heritage. It also forms part of scenic trekking routes popular among both local and international trekkers seeking untouched natural beauty.
