National Textile Museum

Located in the heart of Thimphu, the National Textile Museum is a vibrant showcase of Bhutan’s rich and intricate textile heritage. Established in 2001 under the patronage of Her Majesty Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the museum aims to preserve and promote the art of weaving — an essential part of Bhutanese culture and daily life. The museum’s exhibits are thoughtfully arranged to highlight the diversity of Bhutanese textiles, from royal attire and ceremonial garments to everyday wear. Visitors can admire beautifully handwoven kiras, ghos, and thangkas, crafted from silk, wool, and cotton, each reflecting the distinct patterns and colors of Bhutan’s different regions. The museum also explains the symbolic meanings woven into these designs and the techniques passed down through generations. A particularly fascinating section is the Royal Collection, featuring crowns, dresses, and accessories worn by Bhutan’s royal family. The museum often hosts live weaving demonstrations, allowing visitors to witness the remarkable skill and patience required for traditional weaving. More than just a museum, the National Textile Museum is a cultural hub dedicated to sustaining Bhutan’s living textile traditions, ensuring they continue to thrive as a proud expression of national identity.
