Soe Gewog
Brief Background of the Gewog:
Soe Gewog is one of the three highland gewogs under Lingzhi Dungkhag in Thimphu Dzongkhag, located in Bhutan’s far north along the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Perched at high altitudes ranging roughly from 3,800 to over 5,000 meters, the gewog is characterized by its dramatic mountain scenery, broad alpine meadows, and remote settlement clusters accessible mainly by foot. Its small, scattered villages are among the highest inhabited areas in the country.
The people of Soe Gewog depend largely on yak herding, dairy production, and collection of medicinal plants, particularly cordyceps (Yartsa Gunbu), which is a key source of cash income. Despite facing harsh climatic conditions and long winters, the gewog has retained its traditional nomadic culture and practices. Its pristine environment and unique highland lifestyle also attract trekkers and researchers interested in Bhutan’s remote mountain communities.
